Very soon after the incorporation of Jay as a town, settlers discovered that the granite in North Jay, originally called Bartlett's
Corner, made the best foundations for their new homes. <p> Eventually the use of North Jay White as it was called,
became a prized building material throughout the United States. Architects admored it's uniformity and color, it's whoteness
and even it's eveness of grain. The first really big job, as far as buildings go,was the construction of Grant's Tomb in New
York City.
